Château de Bézyl Sixt sur Aff

First floor

The doors of the grand salon open onto the balcony at the rear of the building. The salon itself boasts a white marble fireplace and has retained the original parquet flooring.

The plaster ceiling features laurel wreaths of shields and squares adorned with gold-painted mushroom shaped balls. The arched door frame into the dining room features woodcarved cherubs and a coat of arms.

With the help of the artist decorator Bert Strik, this room has established its own identity, following on naturally from the organic shapes and warm colours characterising the entrance and staircase.

One of the rooms leading off the grand salon is the drawing room. This is the perfect spot to sit looking out over the gardens, play the piano or enjoy some light refreshment. The oak parquet flooring is new, whilst the décor combines nostalgic and contemporary materials and objects. The magnolia wallpaper echoes the genuine articles outside in the garden. The fireplace is made from restored black and gold Portoro marble and its theme used to create the Portoro marble effect on the pillars in the grand salon.

Also leading off the grand salon is the original fumoir where the gentlemen would retire to smoke their cigars and sip cognac after dinner. It is supposedly one of the last complete examples of this style in Brittany. Its oak parquet flooring, fireplace and panelling are all original, lending a certain warmth and cosiness to this room.

The kitchen is a genuine family room, doubling as a look-out for spotting red squirrels and roe-deer in the garden and, further afield, the countryside surrounding the château. It’s no surprise that the kitchen is a favourite with guests, and one of the most utilised in the whole château. Superbly designed on both practical and aesthetic levels, its light colours and high ceilings suggest an appealing sense of spaciousness, whilst the striking floral design imbues the room with a subtle warmth, with our recurrent theme of nature played out in here in  butterflies and insects. The bespoke cupboards - designed using original panel doors from the kitchen - and panelling perfectly complement the style of the house. The kitchen furniture and worktops were all made by local craftsmen. For more pictures of the kitchen, click here.

The dining room, also accessible from the grand salon, formerly served as a library and study. In contrast to the other rooms, we left the walls and panelling in an understated tone of white, beautifully enhanced by luxurious, draping curtains and a period chandelier. This suitably grand yet convivial room is the perfect place to dine, opening out into the drawing room with its fireplace and cosy sofas.

The formidable, formerly limestone, staircase has been cleverly decorated to appear less preponderous and more elegant. Its walls are upholstered in textile to add structure and character, as well as softness and warmth. The leaded glass windows, dating from 2006, display twining wisteria, whose pale lilac flowers draped across the windows were designed by the artist Bert Strik.
